Job Title Head Engineer - Naval Architect

Description

Position Summary

Design, develop, and evaluate the operation of FRP marine vessels.

Essential Job Functions

  • Collaborate with product development team and Head Engineers for new vessel and existing vessel FRP design and analysis.
  • Design FRP structure with proper core specifications and lamination schedules.
  • Perform weight and stability analysis.
  • Perform performance and powering estimates.
  • Perform hydrostatic and hydrodynamic analysis.
  • Perform at-sea testing and trials.
  • Work with Compliance Officer to ensure regulatory compliance and industry standards are being met.
  • Collaborate with product development team, Director of Engineering, and scheduler to ensure production schedule needs are being met for FRP design.
  • Work with Structures Supervisor to provide expert guidance FRP construction to structures design staff.
  • Assist with creation of 3D models, engineering drawings, and bills of materials.
  • Create and lead engineering change orders (ECOs). Changes are managed across all engineering disciplines to ensure fit form and function.
  • Travel as needed to other company facilities to inspect progress on projects in construction and provide expert guidance for FRP construction.
  • Work with Executive Management to ensure vessel meets design criteria as set out by market conditions and customer requests.

Additional Job Functions

  • Expected to work overtime and flexible hours as needed to meet production schedules and departmental needs.
  • Attend various meetings in person, by phone, and using web services.
  • Wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment including and not limited to gloves, safety glasses, and/or hard hat.
  • Maintain and participates in keeping personal work area, shop and tools clean and safe.
  • Must maintain an excellent attendance record following all company policies and procedures in the Employee Handbook and safety rules.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Naval Architecture, or equivalent from and accredited college or university.
  • 10+ years’ in FRP marine construction.
  • Knowledge of regulatory compliance and industry standards.
  • Knowledge of ASME Y14.100.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Experience with MS Office and Adobe Acrobat.

Other Preferred Skills/Abilities

  • Experience using parametric 3D modeling software (SolidWorks Preferred).
  • High level of attention to detail.
  • Able to work in both office and production atmospheres.
  • Reliable and attentive and able to work in a team environment.

Working Conditions

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arms, to stand, walk and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit, push or pull and lift up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job includes close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

The work environment is a production floor setting and is usually noisy and dusty. It does not always maintain a consistent temperature but is dry. Noise levels are moderate to high with some chemical odors present. When on the production floor, PPE is required where noted.

Safety Requirements

  • Appropriate Personal Protective Equipment including and not limited to gloves, safety glasses, hard hat and or a respirator may need to be worn when handling hazardous products or working in hazardous environments.
  • Maintain and participates in keeping personal work area, shop and tools clean and in proper working order to ensure safe working environment.
  • Hazardous materials are used in the production process. Employees must follow all safety guidelines and know evacuation procedures, the location of first aid stations and MSDS locations in areas they work or visit on Company property.
