Summary:

The Structures Designer will create structural designs, drawings and modeling following standard engineering practices. They will be involved in new design, updates to current designs, and possible retrofitting of current vessels.


Essential Job Functions:

  • Create new and modify existing models of marine structural components using the latest versions of SolidWorks and Rhino.
  • Create new and modify existing part, assembly, and installation drawings for final designs per ASME Y14.100 using latest version of SolidWorks or latest version of AutoCAD.
  • Create new and modify existing 2D (AutoCAD) construction drawings.
  • Create new and modify existing engineering Bill of Materials.
  • Process engineering change orders (ECOs).
Requirements:
  • 5+ years’ experience using parametric 3D modeling software (SolidWorks and Rhino preferred) designing/drafting structural systems.
  • Strong knowledge of ASME Y14.100.
  • Strong knowledge of manufacturing tools and procedures.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Experience with MS Office and Adobe Acrobat.
Additional Job Functions:
  • Ability and basic knowledge to assist other areas of design to support the production facilities (i.e. mechanical, joinery, AV/NAV, structures, etc)
  • Attend meetings in the office, at shipyards and possibly on vessels for project designs and department improvement.
  • Work under direction and guidance of design lead, design supervisor and naval architects.
Other Preferred Skills / Abilities:
  • High level of attention to detail.
  • Able to work in both office and production atmospheres.
  • Reliable and attentive and able to work in a team environment.
  • Experience in both fiberglass/composite and aluminum desired.
  • Previous design experience at a shipyard a plus.

  • Must be able to work in an environment with loud noise.
  • Must be able to work in an environment with dust.
  • Must be able to work in an environment with chemical odors.
Working Conditions:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arms, to stand, walk and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit, push or pull and lift up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job includes close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

The work environment is a production floor setting and is usually noisy and dusty. It does not always maintain a consistent temperature but is dry. Noise levels are moderate to high with some chemical odors present. When on the production floor, PPE is required where noted.
